Date versus date

Scenario One: You meet a guy in a bar whilst out with friends. He is not a friend of a friend or anyone you know even remotely. You exchange a few words then your friends pull you away because you have to meet up with another friend elsewhere. He asks for your number and you give it to him. What's the harm? A few days later he texts you and a few days after that you meet up in a public place for a date.

Scenario Two: You go online. You get talking (virtually) to a guy that you don't know on a dating site. You arrange to meet up in real life in a public place to go on a date.

What really is the difference between these two scenarios? I, for one, would not try out scenario two. I want to meet someone whilst out or through a friend or what not, and so I have done scenario one. But how much do you really get to know someone when you only get the chance to speak a few words with them? And I'm not saying that everyone that people meet online are creeps, but how do we know that these people that you meet out in public and then decide to go on a date with are any different than creeps that stalk the net?
